Bowen Therapy

What is Bowen Therapy and how can it help?

Bowen Therapy is a non-intrusive hands-on therapy. It can be done through light clothing with the client lying, sitting or standing and we find that it is normally suitable for everyone from new born babies to older people, and from active to infirm people.

Bowen does not force the body to change; rather it asks the body to recognise and make the changes necessary to bring it back to a better balance.

The treatment is mostly carried out by doing small and light rolling movements with fingers and thumbs.  The technique is based on the theory that gentle moves over precise points of the body can prompt the body’s innate ability to relieve pain, restriction and imbalance without the need for deep, manipulative or forceful treatment.

Between sets of moves the body is allowed to rest for a few minutes so that it can absorb the signals it has received.  Bowen is generally pleasant to receive, each session lasting 30 – 50 minutes, depending on the age of the client and the nature of their symptoms.  Many clients become so relaxed they fall asleep during the treatment.

Bowen can help with a wide range of physical and emotional symptoms.  Clients report that it is effective at relieving or resolving a wide range of issues, whatever the cause.  Frequent complaints that are brought to our clinic are back pain, restricted shoulders and headaches.  Bowen can also help with feeling well, improving sleep patterns and reducing anxiety and some clients have treatments on a regular basis as they think it helps them to stay flexible and well.

Bowen practitioners do not diagnose or prescribe or alter medication.  The Bowen technique is not intended as a substitute for medical advice or treatment and we advise that you consult your doctor if you have any concerns.

What can Bowen Therapy treat?

Bowen therapy can help all the body systems to rebalance  so we ‘treat’ the whole person rather than specific conditions.  However, clients report that it is effective at relieving or resolving a wide range of issues whatever the cause including:

  • Headaches
  • Joint and back pain, restricted shoulders, arthritis, whiplash, sports injuries
  • Breathing and sinus problems
  • Digestion – irritable bowel, indigestion,  constipation
  • Chronic fatigue and long term conditions such as Parkinsons
  • Gynaecological issues, pregnancy and fertility
  • Babies and children – sleeping, feeding, energy and attention levels as well as aches and pains

It is also often a help in improving the quality of life for those who are terminally ill.

Bowen can also help with feeling well – reducing aches and pains, helping with sleep patterns, reducing feelings of stress and anxiety and generally keeping us mobile.  Some clients return on a regular basis because they think Bowen helps them to stay flexible and well, despite the wear and tear that work, hobbies, gardening and sport can have on us.

Having said all of that, please note that the Bowen technique is not intended as a substitute for medical advice or treatment and we advise that you consult your doctor if you have any concerns about your health.

Who can have Bowen therapy?

Bowen Therapy is a therapy that is appropriate for everyone, whatever age from the active to the infirm.  A treatments can normally be done through light clothing and is very gentle.

Why is it called Bowen Therapy?

The therapy is named after Tom Bowen (1916 – 1982) who lived in Australia. He started by treating the injuries, aches and pains of local sportsmen, friends and family and colleagues in Geelong. In the 1960s, he opened his own clinic and developed the therapy, passing his knowledge on to a small group of people who have subsequently developed the treatment.

What can I expect when I come for a Bowen treatment?

We will have already spoken on the phone before you have your first appointment.  At our first meeting, whether it is at our clinic or at your home, we will discuss what issues you are experiencing and what you would like the treatment to help you with.  We will take a detailed medical history.  If you are taking prescription medicines it will be helpful if you have the names of the medicines with you.

Treatment can be done directly on the skin or through light clothing, ideally a t-shirt and light trousers or shorts.   You can bring a change of clothes with you if you wish.

The treatment can be carried out with you either sitting, lying or standing.  Gentle rolling moves are made over muscles, ligaments and tendons with breaks between moves to allow your body to respond.

How long does a Bowen treatment take?

Adult appointments are usually between 40 minutes to 50 minutes, but may be shorter when that is appropriate.  An appointment for children and babies is normally 30 minutes.

How many Bowen sessions will I need?

Everyone responds differently depending on their circumstances.   Initially it is advised to have at least two sessions roughly one week apart.  The average number of sessions people have is three to four, however some people will need further or even on-going treatment.  Some of our clients return on a regular basis because they believe Bowen helps them to stay well.

How do I book an appointment?

To contact us, please telephone 01953 452286 and leave a message or email us individually or on info@bowennorfolk.co.uk.  We will return your call or email as soon as we can.   When we speak on the phone, we will agree an appointment date and time, and you’ll be given directions on how to reach our clinic.

Children’s clinic for babies and children and of course their mums

Pregnant mums

Pregnancy can be a wonderful time, but it can take a toll on a lady’s body and well-being, from morning sickness and tiredness to backache and sciatica.  Bowen can be help to reduce symptoms during pregnancy and after birth.

Tom Bowen held regular clinics giving free treatments to children with long term disabilities, and his granddaughter had a disability. Following Tom’s example, rather than charge, we ask for a donation for treatments for babies and children under 5 years old and children with long term disabilities.

We have a box of books and toys to help children relax.  Babies can be treated from birth and Bowen can be very soothing to young children.  A child's Bowen treatment is very gentle. Parents and carers have reported improvement in symptoms of many childhood ailments and problems after their children have received Bowen Therapy.

Benefits may include:

  • Improved posture, balance and co-ordination
  • Improved digestion and relief from colic and constipation
  • Healthier children with better concentration
  • Improved sleeping patterns
  • Enhanced motor control & behaviour
  • Leading to quieter, happier children.

All treatments are carried out through light clothing, whilst the parent / guardian remains in the room.

Some childhood ailments and conditions may require regular Bowen treatments.

Canine Bowen

Canine Bowen is based on the human Bowen Technique, in that it is an effective light touch physical therapy that promotes healing, pain relief and body rebalancing.

The first session can be quite short as your dog is introduced to the Bowen touch.  The treatment is done at the dog’s pace and can take from as little as 10 minutes to around 40 minutes.  Initially 2 treatments are recommended.

Bowen therapy is not a replacement for veterinary treatment and your vet will need to give permission for me to treat your dog.  Please contact me for an initial discussion.

I practised massage and reflexology (www.aor.org.uk) before qualifying as a Bowen therapist in 2007. I had spent many years trying all sorts of therapies to recover from a neck injury. I read an article about Bowen and tried it. After the 2nd treatment I was free of the pain that I’d had for many years. I was won over and signed up to learn the skills as soon as I could.

I had been having severe migraines since I was a child. After a few Bowen treatments the migraines virtually stopped and the occasional one I have now is mild and manageable. I qualified in 2011. When I started visiting clients at home I met lots of dogs, most wanting to investigate what I was doing to their owner and getting in on the session. So I trained with the School of Canine Bowen Technique and now enjoy working with dogs as well as people.
